Vanderbilt is set to lose some depth on its defense as De’Rickey Wright has reportedly entered the transfer portal, Vandy 247 reported.

Wright is a sophomore outside linebacker/safety who played the “Anchor” position at Vanderbilt, the commonly used hybrid slot on defense. Last season in 8 games, Wright made 24 total tackles with 3 1/2 tackles for a loss. The 6-foot-4, 230-pounder was previously committed to Ole Miss and Alabama during high school when he came out as a 4-star recruit, according to 247Sports.

Wright was expected to compete for a starting spot in 2022 after the native of Gadsden, Alabama, was a co-starter for the Commodores in 2021, but missed time because of a suspension.

Clark Lea spoke about Wright after he missed the Mississippi State game.

“Any time that you’re rebuilding a program, part of that rebuild has to be the decisions we make and the way we function, our behaviors off the field,” Lea said. “It has gotta be a complete turnaround, and things that hamper performance aren’t just the Xs and Os and aren’t just the preparation. There are the choices and decisions that we make 24 hours a day and seven days a week. De’Rickey is a young player and young person that has some maturing to do, and he will, and we are gonna support him through that. But in the meantime, there are certain things that we’re not gonna allow for and that we’re not gonna accept. We’re dealing with that with De’Rickey right now.”
