Vanderbilt WR Trent Sherfield bonds with Vandy legend
Philadelphia Eagles WR Jordan Matthews was one of the best players in Vanderbilt history and still holds SEC records for receptions and receiving yards.
Though he was picked by the Eagles in the 2014 NFL Draft, he’s still a mentor to some of the current Commodore receivers, including junior Trent Sherfield.
The mentoring from Matthews goes beyond breaking down game film, though, according to an article in The Tennessean:
“Of all the stuff that (Matthews) has done for me, one of the biggest is that he loans me books to read,” Sherfield said. “He tells me that the brain is a muscle, as well, and it’s got to be exercised every day.”
Sherfield said he’s learned from Matthews that staying sharp mentally is just as important as staying sharp physically:
“Jordan recommends books and loans them to me because he wants me to excel on the field and off the field,” Sherfield said. “His mindset is that you’ve got to be mentally tough in things other than just football. That’s the kind of guy he is.
“When I talked to him the other day, the main thing he told me was to stay on top of my reading.”
While Matthews’ receiving records are likely out of reach for Sherfield, he did set a school record of his own with 240 receiving yards against Austin Peay last year.
Sherfield finished the 2015 season with 51 catches for 659 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Commodores.
