Every now and then, something happens that really puts the game of football in perspective.

Vanderbilt got that wake-up call recently, as it was announced that sophomore TE Turner Cockrell had been diagnosed with melanoma. After surgery over the summer, it was discovered that the cancer had spread to Cockrell’s lungs, and he’s undergoing further treatment in Houston.

As Cockrell continues to battle the scary disease, Vanderbilt’s Week 3 opponent, Notre Dame, is thinking of him. As you can see in the video below, a pair of Notre Dame players give a shoutout to the Commodore tight end:

That’s a classy gesture from the Irish, and it’s clear that everyone is rooting for Cockrell to beat cancer and return to the field.

Cockrell will continue to be on the minds of his teammates, and Vanderbilt’s Week 3 foe will also hold him in their hearts this weekend.
