It’s Week 14 and Vanderbilt still hasn’t figured out who its quarterback is. The Commodores have started all four signal callers in 2014 and have made more than ten QB changes.

Johnny McCrary seemed to be the frontrunner to end the season after tying the school record for single-game touchdown passes (5) against Old Dominion. But McCrary struggled in his last two starts, restarting the quarterback roulette in Nashville.

Former starter Patton Robinette, who missed more than a month of action after suffering a concussion on Sept. 20, saw playing time against Florida and No. 4 Mississippi State, but exited last week’s loss after throwing an interception on his only drive. Stephen Rivers also saw playing time, going 0-for-2 on Vanderbilt’s last two offensive plays.

On Saturday, Vanderbilt will face in-state rival Tennessee for its season finale. The Commodores need to figure out who their quarterback will be for Satruday’s game and the future.

McCrary still looks like the most viable option. The redshirt freshman has athletic attributes, but is still raw in his development and needs to show improvement. Still, he provides the Commodores with the best option to win long-term.

Vanderbilt needs to invest in McCrary and give him as many reps as possible. He will improve with gained experience and, despite facing their biggest rival this weekend, the Commodores’ season is already a lost cause. Vanderbilt must focus on the future above all other things and McCrary is the quarterback of the future.
