The Bednarik Award honors the best defensive player in college football, so it seems like a no-brainer that an Alabama player would have won the award at some point.

However, DL Jonathan Allen made history on Thursday night at the College Football Awards show, becoming the first Crimson Tide defender to win the trophy:

The senior lineman finished the 2016 regular season with 8.5 sacks and returned two fumbles for touchdowns.

As one of the best interior defensive linemen in the country, Allen will likely go early in the 2017 NFL Draft.
