Alabama’s 52-6 rout of Southern California was the highlight of a bleak opening weekend for the SEC. There were many notable players for the Crimson Tide, and senior linebacker Tim Williams was certainly among them.

Although he didn’t register a sack, Williams was a consistent source of pressure for Alabama when he was sent to wreak havoc on the Trojans’ backfield. The talented analysts at Pro Football Focus broke down his performance, and it may have been better than many people realize.

On 17 pass-rushing snaps, Williams notched two hits and three quarterback hurries, according to PFF. What’s more impressive is that Williams spent most of the night playing against USC right tackle Zach Banner, a potential first-round draft pick in next year’s draft.

Pro Football Focus measured the pass-rushing productivity from Week 1 and Williams topped the list.

“Williams was the best in the nation, with a PRP rating of 23.4,” PFF wrote of his performance. “That number itself is ridiculous, but when you really dig into it, you see that Williams got pressure of some form once every 3.2 pass-rushing attempts. Texas A&M’s Myles Garrett has a phenomenal game against UCLA, but even he trailed Williams, averaging a pressure once every four pass-rushing snaps.”

The Crimson Tide lost several impact players from last year’s team to the NFL draft, but, once again, it looks like they’ve completely reloaded.
