A quick glance at the Georgia football record book reveals one undeniable fact: Herschel Walker was awesome.

Not only does his name appear atop the Bulldogs records in 41 different categories, he also owns 16 SEC records and 11 NCAA records.

We could easily do a list of five Herschel Walker records that are likely to never be broken. But for the sake of keeping things interesting, we will only take a look at two of Walker’s most lofty records.

1. Herschel Walker: most rushes in three seasons (1980-82) — Walker carried the ball a staggering 994 times over his three-year career at Georgia, which set an NCAA record that has stood uncontested for over 30 years. In order to get to this total, Walker set the SEC record for carries per game in a career (30.1) and carries per game in a single season (35.0). While all of the above are likely to remain school records, the 994 carries in a three-year period should remain a NCAA record for decades to come.

2. Herschel Walker: most rushing yards in a career (1980-82) — Walker made good use of his record-setting amount of carries, setting the school and conference record for career rushing yardage in spite of only playing three seasons. His 5,259 rushing yards have not been approached in the 33 years since he last took the field for Georgia. Last season, Todd Gurley finished his career in second place on the rushing yardage list, but his 3,285 yards were only 62.5 percent of the way to Walker’s mark. Other accomplished backs, such as Garrison Hearst, Knowshon Moreno and Rodney Hampton, have turned in solid career numbers that still pale in comparison to this school record.

3. Most team rushing attempts in a game (1967) — It felt like it was time to talk about a non-Herschel Walker record, and this looks like a good one. Nearly 50 years ago, Georgia was a 31-7 winner over Kentucky on a late October afternoon in Lexington. On the way to victory, the No. 6-ranked Bulldogs rushed the ball a SEC-record 89 times. Georgia has topped 80 rushing attempts just one other time, when the Bulldogs ran the ball 81 times in a game against South Carolina in 1969. It seems highly unlikely that Georgia can reach the 90 rushing attempts in one game it would require to break this record.

4. Most interceptions thrown in a game (1951) — While it is mostly used to celebrate the all-time great performances in a program’s history, you can find your way into the record book for not-so-good reasons. That’s the case for former Bulldogs QB Zeke Bratkowski, who once threw eight interceptions in a game against Georgia Tech back in 1951. Though Bratkowski holds the school and SEC records for interceptions in a season (29) and career (68), the single-game record seems most likely to stay on the books at Georgia. In the modern era, coaches are not afraid to yank a quarterback out of the game after a few mistakes. That would likely occur long before a quarterback could get to a ninth interception in the same game.

5. Career touchdown responsibility (2010-13) — It is recent, but former QB Aaron Murray crushed this record. With 121 touchdown passes and another 16 on the ground, Murray was responsible for 137 touchdowns over his four-year stint with the Bulldogs. The previous record was 77 touchdowns by QB David Greene (2001-04). Former QB Eric Zeier (71 in 1991-94) is the only other player even half way to Murray’s new record. It would take a four-year player an average of 34.5 touchdowns per season to be responsible for more touchdowns than Murray was in his time with the Bulldogs.
