Former LSU RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire will not be available for the Kansas City Chiefs as they start the 2024 NFL season.

The Chiefs have placed Edwards-Helaire on the NFI (Non-Football Injury List). He can not return to the active roster until after the team’s first four games.

The news comes as Edwards-Helaire has opened up about his struggle with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It has caused Edwards-Helaire to miss practices.

“Sometimes I’m admitted into the hospital, something like I can’t stop throwing up and it’s just, I [don’t] know [anything] pretty much to stop it,” Edwards-Helaire said, per an Aug. 1 ESPN article.

“Real bad dehydration … but it’s really just mentally just not being there. It is one of those things where early on guys who kind of pay attention like Travis [Kelce] and Kadarius [Toney], at times they can even, they’ll know ahead of time like, ‘OK, Clyde’s not laughing, he’s not giggling, he’s not himself.'”

Edwards-Helaire traces the PTSD back to his time at LSU. On Dec. 22, 2018, Edwards-Helaire and LSU teammate Jared Small were attempting to sell an electronic item. Edwards-Helaire declines to go into detail beyond saying that they found themelves in a “self-defense situation.” The 18-year-old man trying to rob them was fatally shot.

An Associated Press report from Jan. 1, 2019 notes East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney Hillar Moore told the AP that Edwards-Helaire and Small appeared to use justifiable force in the situation.

Edwards-Helaire has played professionally for 4 seasons. He has logged 441 carries for 1,845 yards and 12 touchdowns with the Chiefs, adding 122 receptions for 765 yards and 7 scores. He saw action for Kansas City in the 2024 preseason.

Football fans everywhere will be hoping to hear positive news on Edwards-Helaire.
