NFL.com analyst Lance Zierlein has been working furiously to cultivate scouting reports on some of the biggest names in college football this season and then comparing them to NFL players (past and present) to give readers an idea of what to expect during draft season and beyond.

Tuesday he completed his thumbnail scouting report on LSU star running back Leonard Fournette, who is regarded as one of the best prospects at his positions in years. He did not hold back on the lofty (or is it?) comparisons, likening the Heisman trophy candidate to College Football Hall of Famer and former Auburn legend Bo Jackson.

Here’s his explanation:

The list of running backs with Fournette’s size, power and speed is a relatively short one, but there’s one player who stands out as a very reasonable comparison — Bo Jackson. Jackson came into the league at a chiseled 6-1 and 230 pounds, which is about the same size as Fournette. Jackson (college) and Fournette (high school) were both track and field stars. Fournette showed off his power this weekend, adding to his legend, while “Tecmo Bo” is a video-game reference that is an homage to the seemingly impossible task of tackling Jackson. Both Jackson and Fournette are a little stiffer in the hips with their running styles, but it doesn’t, and didn’t (in Jackson’s case), seem to have any impact on their production.

Awesome power and breakaway speed are the defining characteristics of both runners. Fournette has a chance to build his legend on the back of one sport, rather than the two (baseball and football) where Jackson thrived.

Fournette, who has 3,657 career rushing yards (6.42 ypc) and 37 touchdowns in his three years with LSU, missed two games with injury this season but returned for last week’s 38-21 win vs. Ole Miss in which he finished with a personal best 284 yards and three scores on just 16 attempts.

He’s still got a long way to go before he can be on par with someone so proven and respected as Jackson, but if someone’s going to take that title anytime soon, it’s probably Fournette.
