Former Mississippi State tight end C.J. Sirmones was killed last night with what is being ruled a homicide by Lawrence County (TN) police, according to a report from The Starkville Daily’s Joel Coleman.

Sirmones is most known for his game-tying touchdown against Ole Miss in the 1999 Egg Bowl with :38 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. Mississippi State found itself down 20-13 about 12 yards deep into opponent territory, but quarterback Wayne Madkin found a wide-open Sirmones down the field, who scampered in for the score. The Bulldogs would then end up converting on a 44-yard, game-winning field goal before regulation expired.

This is the second fatal occurrence involving a Bulldogs player over the last two weeks, with wide receiver Chris Smith passing away following a shooting earlier this month.

We will monitor and update this story as it continues to develop.
