ESPN's latest CFP projection includes 3 SEC teams amongst 'first 4 out'
There is still a ways to go before the College Football Playoff picture begins to take shape at all, but it’s never too early to start guessing.
And that’s what a lot of different analysts are doing right now with Week 1 completely in the books, including Heather Dinich of ESPN.
Dinich recently laid out who she believes will be the first four teams out of the College Football Playoff, and three of them belong to the Southeastern Conference. They are the Missouri Tigers, the Tennessee Volunteers and the Oklahoma Sooners.
Here’s a look at what Dinich had to say about each of the teams:
Missouri Tigers: “The Tigers are here because they got bumped out of the selection committee’s top 12 to make room for Boise State as the fifth highest-ranked conference champion. The Bubble Watch agrees here with the Allstate Playoff Predictor, which has Missouri with the 12th-best chance to reach the CFP.”
Tennessee Volunteers: The Allstate Playoff Predictor likes the Vols more than Missouri, giving them a 49.9% chance to reach the 12-team field. This is certainly possible with a quarterback as talented as Nico Iamaleava, but the Vols would bolster the hype more with a win Saturday against NC State in the Duke’s Mayo Classic. ESPN Analytics gives the Vols an 88.1% chance to win.
Oklahoma Sooners: The Sooners had no trouble dismantling Temple, 51-3, on a Friday night, but they might have a tough time establishing themselves as a top contender in the SEC in their first year in the conference. According to ESPN Analytics, the Sooners have the seventh-best chance in the SEC to reach the conference championship game.
All of these teams seem to hold a path to the CFP as things currently stand, but it’s important to note just how much things can change as time goes on. The Sooners, Tigers and Volunteers all currently stand at 1-0 with solid play from all of the above, but they’ll truly be put to the test as the schedule toughens up with the progression of the season.
As for Dinich’s projected 12-team field, 4 teams from the SEC made the cut: No. 1 Georgia, No. 5 Texas, No. 9 Ole Miss and No. 10 Alabama. LSU also earned a mention from Dinich in the “next 4 out” section.
Quarterback play will also be something to keep an eye on for all of the above, especially with Brady Cook and Nico Iamaleava both showing the potential to be among the nation’s top signal-callers for the 2024 season.
Crissy, don’t listen to Adam about QBs,, it’s a bad bet. Also check the schedule, Mizzou vs OU is on it,, maybe that will help?
Her opinion is no better than mine. Missouri can’t lose more than 2 games to have a chance to get in. But that can be said for all other sec teams. She is just guessing like everyone else. I don’t care what she thinks.
All of these predictions just like pre season rankings are comical at best. At least wait 3/4 games into the season. Look and laugh but otherwise you are right your opinion and her opinion hold the same weight. Except some one was silly enough to pay her for hers.
