It’s been nearly a month since former Ole Miss linebackers coach Tom Allen left Oxford to take over as the new defensive coordinator at the University of South Florida.

This week, the Rebels addressed their coaching vacancy by promoting from within their program.

According to a report by Hugh Kellenberger of the Jackson Clarion-Ledger, Ole Miss has promoted Corey Batoon to its defensive coaching staff for the 2015 season. Batoon will coach the Rebels’ safeties next season, while defensive coordinator Dave Wommack will double as the team’s linebackers coach.

Both Batoon and Wommack maintained those roles while the Rebels prepared for their Peach Bowl appearance last month.

Batoon served as Ole Miss’ assistant athletic director for recruiting operations the last three seasons, and he served as an assistant coach at Arkansas State for three years before that, including Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze’s lone season at ASU. From 1998-2008 he served as the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator at Northern Arizona.

Batoon’s promotion marks the first change to the Ole Miss coaching staff since the departure of cornerbacks coach Wesley McGriff following the 2012 season.
