ESPN has two SEC teams among its top 5 in its Football Power Index, but it might not be the two teams you’d expect.

The ranking has LSU at No. 1 and Tennessee at No. 5. Defending national champion Alabama is nowhere to be found. Rounding out the top 5 are No. 2 Florida State, No. 3 Oklahoma and No. 4 Clemson.

The system had Oklahoma as the best team from Week 10 until the end of the season when the Crimson Tide, of course, claimed it at the end of the year.

The Big 12 had a stranglehold on the FPI rankings for virtually all of 2015 as a Big 12 team was ranked at No. 1 from Week 5 all the way until Alabama took the top spot.

Here’s a passage from ESPN’s FPI page explaining the calculation:

“The Football Power Index (FPI) is a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team’s performance going forward for the rest of the season. FPI represents how many points above or below average a team is. Projected results are based on 10,000 simulations of the rest of the season using FPI, results to date, and the remaining schedule.”
