Compared to the disastrous flooding in Columbia, losing a home football game is no big deal for South Carolina. Yet, moving its scheduled home game from the friendly confines of Williams-Brice Stadium to Baton Rouge presents just another challenge to a Gamecock team reeling from a disappointing showing at Missouri.
Freshman Lorenzo Nunez makes his second start at quarterback for the Gamecocks against the unbeaten Tigers, eager toย make up for a lackluster performance against Eastern Michigan.ย The much-malignedย Gamecock defense must tackle Leonard Fournette on his home turf.
Here’s five key players to watch in the 3:30 p.m. EDT kickoff:
- South Carolina OLB Skai Moore — The Gamecocks’ best defender must have a big day stopping Fournette. Moore has done it against the run and the passย this season with 52 tackles — 20 more than the closest teammate —ย and three interceptions.
- South Carolina QB Lorenzo Nunez — The freshman has shown big-play ability since taking over two weeks ago. But three interceptions in the second halfย ruined the Gamecocks chances of a comeback at Missouri.
- LSUย QB Brandon Harris — Playing at home against a struggling offensive team, Harris needs to take care of the ball, avoiding turnovers that could give the underdog Gamecocks a boost. He hasn’t thrown an interception in 61 passes.
- South Carolina WR Pharoh Cooper — The Gamecock star has 26 receptions — more than twice as many as any teammate — for 322 yards and two touchdowns. He’s also a threat running ball or taking snaps in the shotgun.
- LSU RB Leonard Fournette —ย OK, you can’t have a list of key LSU players without the Tigers’ spectacular back, who’s a threat to score every time ย he gets the ball. In four games, he’s rushed for 864 yards and 11 TDs. He’d be listed much higher, but his effectiveness is close to a sure bet.
