Sherrone Moore could face NCAA sanctions stemming from Connor Stalions case, per report
Sherrone Moore could be set to face sanctions from the NCAA stemming from the Connor Stalions case, according to a report.
Moore is named in a draft of the NCAA’s Notice of Allegations, according to ESPN’s Dan Murphy and Pete Thamel. The draft is subject to change before being finalized, but the allegations against Moore appear to be serious.
Per ESPN’s report, Moore faces a potential show-cause penalty and a potential suspension for allegedly deleting 52 text messages with Stalions. The report says the messages were deleted — but later recovered — on the same day that media reports surfaced about Stalions leading Michigan’s alleged sign-stealing scheme.
The report also says that Moore could be considered a “repeat violator” by the NCAA. Last August, Moore “negotiated a resolution” to claims that he texted recruits during a COVID-19 dead period.
A number of former Michigan coaches are also accused of committing violations related to the Stalions case in the NCAA’s Notice of Allegations draft. That list includes Jim Harbaugh, Chris Partridge, Denard Robinson and, of course, Stalions. Ex-Michigan coaches Jesse Minter and Steve Clinkscale are named in the NOA draft as well, but for recruiting violations unrelated to the Stalions case.
Notably, the NCAA’s NOA draft also says it has gathered evidence that shows Stalions was on Central Michigan’s sideline for its season-opener against Michigan State back in 2023. Central Michigan confirmed last fall that it was investigating a sideline photo of a man who resembled Stalions.
NCAA investigators also claim that multiple people in Michigan’s program knew about the sign-stealing scheme. Here’s an excerpt from ESPN’s report:
“The investigators also allege that multiple team interns and at least one other full-time team employee knew about the scheme and participated in it. The draft says that Stalions led those individuals to believe that what they were doing was not against the rules.”
Stalions’ side of the story will be featured in a new Netflix documentary, set to be released later this month.
Michigan will open the 2024 season against Fresno State on Aug. 31. If Moore faces a multi-game suspension to start the year, he would also miss Michigan’s Week 2 contest against Texas.
