College football fans browsing their Twitter feeds last Oct. 4 were treated to a flurry of reactions from the College GameDay broadcast.

Social media blew up that morning in reaction to Katy Perry’s bizarre appearance on the ESPN pregame show at Ole Miss. The words “Corndog” and “Trevor Knight” went viral as the pop star’s appearance transmitted from TV oddity to internet sensation.

Now, a new season has arrived, and with it will be plenty of things that make Twitter explode. Perhaps Ms. Perry doesn’t make another appearance on GameDay, but you can bet something equally bizarre related to college football will go viral. Here are our best guesses as to what SEC topics will create a buzz in 2015:

1. Myles Garrett goes ballistic

No FBS player has ever had more than six sacks in a game, but this could be the year that this seemingly unbreakable record breaks.

Garrett, the Texas A&M defensive end, lit up the field last season en route to recording 11 1/2 sacks as a true freshman. He’s said he wants to be the best pass rusher in college football, and even coming close to the single-game record would vault his status further online.

If Garrett does set the single-game sack record, expect it to be early in the Aggies season. Perhaps the Sept. 12 game against Ball State will be a day of frenzy tweeting about the second coming of Deacon Jones.

2. Nick Chubb vs. Leonard Fournette for the Heisman

It’s a shame that LSU and Georgia don’t play each other in the regular season, because this possible Heisman Trophy showdown would be epic in a game situation.

The sophomore running backs already proved they were among the best in the country last season. Now, they take over their respective teams and look to put up huge numbers in 2015. With the carries Chubb and Fournette are expected to get, their stats could be fairly identical by season’s end. Expect Tigers and Bulldogs fans to battle over who’s better on Twitter.

3. Kenny Chesney finally chooses one team to support

Let’s just say Kenny Chesney knows how to work a crowd.

The country music star performed during College GameDay at Columbia, S.C., but some Gamecocks fans weren’t thrilled that the fan of Tennessee/Alabama/every SEC team was chosen to represent their school on national TV. But maybe, just maybe, 2015 is the year that Chensey sticks with one team. Heck, it may even be South Carolina – Chesney did narrate ESPN’s Steve Spurrier documentary, after all.

If Chensey does decide to go SEC steady, though, expect Twitter to be rightfully skeptical.

4. The College Football Playoff Debate

Ohio State’s national championship put the Big Ten back on the map. The Pac-12 is fairly loaded this year, and the College Football Playoff committee may feel it owes the Big 12 after last season’s Baylor-TCU fiasco.

It’s hard to imagine a playoff without the SEC. But in such a brutal conference, and one where the SEC Championship Game doesn’t always yield the two best teams, college football fans will be abuzz about which team(s) should play for the title.

Oh, and SEC fans will definitely let fans of other conferences know which one is truly the country’s elite division through their tweets.

5. Katy Perry returns to The Grove

On Nov. 21, a little more than a year after her initial College GameDay experience, Perry returns to the program fo the Mississippi-LSU game in Oxford. There, for millions to see online, Perry will eat a corn dog while donning an old Colonel Reb mask.

Twitter will never be the same.
