A week after taking in the Cal campus, former Tennessee RB Jalen Hurd is visiting a prominent program a little closer to home.

Eleven Warriors reported Friday night that Hurd would visit Ohio State.

Hurd left Tennessee because of his desire to be used more as a pass-catcher than as a traditional running back. He’ll likely be told exactly what he wants to hear from Ohio State coach Urban Meyer.

At Florida, Meyer was known for being creative and experimental with finding ways to get the ball in the hands of his playmakers. He would frequently have WR Percy Harvin lineup in the backfield or use TE Aaron Hernandez as an h-back when Tim Tebow ran the option. During his UF tenure, Meyer converted two quarterbacks to tight ends: Cornelius Ingram and Trey Burton. He also briefly tried RB Chris Rainey at wide receiver in 2010, hoping that Rainey’s speed would enhance Florida’s passing game.

In three seasons with the Vols, Hurd carried the ball 589 times, gaining 2,638 yards, No. 6 among the school’s all-time leading rushers, and scoring 20 touchdowns. He also recorded 67 catches for 492 yards and 6 touchdowns.

While Hurd’s situation differs from the Florida players who moved around, Meyer’s history of finding ways to get the best athletes on the field will likely be music to the former Vol’s ears.
