When the final list of underclassmen declaring for the NFL was revealed, former Tennessee RB Jalen Hurd was noticeably absent. It appears that the junior ball-carrier isn’t done with college football.

Scout.com’s Bear Territory broke the news Friday that Hurd would be visiting Berkeley, his first visit since leaving the Vols following UT’s Oct. 29 upset loss to South Carolina. In a statement regarding his departure, Hurd stated that he wanted to find a better fit for his skill set. He signed with Tennessee in 2014 as a 4-star athlete, rated the No. 40 overall recruit by the 247Sports Composite.

Cal recently fired coach Sonny Dykes and hired Justin Wilcox, who at Tennessee in 2010-11 (prior to Hurd’s arrival) as defensive coordinator. Wilcox hired Beau Baldwin, formerly of Eastern Washington, as his new offensive coordinator.

Baldwin runs a spread offense based on quick passes. Hurd may find that offense to be a fit for him to get more opportunities as a pass-catcher.

In three seasons with the Vols, Hurd carried the ball 589 times, gaining 2638 yards, No. 6 among the school’s all-time leading rushers, and scoring 20 touchdowns. He also recorded 67 catches for 492 yards and 6 touchdowns.

Hurd would know at least one familiar face out at Cal, as WR Vic Wharton, a fellow 2014 signee at Tennessee, transferred to Berkeley after one season at Rocky Top.
