Former Tennessee QB Joshua Dobbs could not have asked for a much better situation in his rookie season. The fourth-round draft pick will get to adjust to the pros while learning from one of the most experienced and talented quarterbacks in the game, Ben Roethlisberger.

“It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity just being able to learn from one of the greatest quarterbacks to play,” Dobbs told Jovan Buha of ESPN. “Just going in learning the atmosphere, learn as much as I can from him [and] the coaches. Whenever my number is called I have to be ready to go.”

While there’s a long offseason ahead, Pittsburgh has demonstrated its commitment to developing Dobbs. Following the NFL Draft, the Steelers cut veteran QB Zach Mettenberger, the team’s third-string quarterback last season. Entering training camp, the battle for the backup job will be between Dobbs and former Oklahoma QB Landry Jones. USA Today’s Curt Popejoy recently opined that Dobbs will beat out Jones for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart.

Some have already speculated that Dobbs could become Pittsburgh’s starter before too long. After all, last year’s No. 135 pick, Dak Prescott, took over for an established veteran when a back injury sidelined Tony Romo.

Just don’t go making that Prescott-Dobbs comparison on Twitter.
