New Tennessee OC Larry Scott thinks one aspect of the Vols’ offense will be a little bit different in 2017.

While on SportsTalk with Jimmy Hyams on WNML Sports Radio, Scott said that the Vols will run plays from under center “a little bit more” this season.

The question was in context surrounding Joshua Dobbs’ recent comments about how similar the Vols’ scheme is to the Steelers’ scheme. So, without Dobbs, Hyams asked Scott if Tennessee’s offense will go under center more under his leadership.

“Probably a little bit more, being more balanced and those type of things with under center and in the gun,” Scott told Hyams. “One of the things we really want to continue to do here and rev up and get better at it is just the overall development of the football player. And a lot of that comes through your system and how you play.

“Again, looking at our team and the weaknesses and some of the strengths, it depends on that as well, but as we build it, we want to make sure we’re always giving them a strong foundation that makes them NFL-ready, just as off the field we want to make them people that are better citizens and those things in the community as well. So, it’s a holistic approach.”

Following the graduation of Dobbs, a prototypical spread QB, the offense looks to be due for a shuffle with not only Scott but also new QBs Quinten Dormady and Jarrett Guarantano coming into the fold.

After years of relative consistency with respect to offensive philosophy, the Vols are shaking things up under Scott’s leadership. And that may not be such a bad thing either.
