Derek Mason and the Commodores lost out on what could’ve been their fourth four-star commit this week when West Coast cornerback Frank Buncom made his verbal pledge to Stanford.
It wasn’t a detrimental move for the 2015 class — Mason’s first full class at Vanderbilt — as long as touted prospects Josh Smith (linebacker), Donovan Sheffield (cornerback) and Kyle Shurmur (quarterback) remain committed. Vanderbilt is currently ranked 13th in the SEC with 15 commits following a winless league season.
Smith, a U.S. Army All-American, canceled official visits to Oklahoma and Oregon this month and appears to be solid in his commitment to Vanderbilt.
If you’re feeling bad today then remember, Vanderbilt is still ahead of Florida in recruiting

The Commodores are hoping to land four-star defensive back Quenton Meeks in the next few days, a talented ballhawk out of Crescent City, Calif. Meeks took an official visit to Nashville on Jan. 16 and is expected to choose between Vanderbilt and Stanford.
Vanderbilt has room to sign a couple more players and should approach 20 total on Wednesday.
