Frank Buncom, a talented four-star defensive back Derek Mason and the Vanderbilt Commodores thought they could land out of San Diego, has committed to Stanford.

Buncom made his decision Wednesday during a ceremony at St. Augustine High in California. He chose the Cardinal over Vanderbilt, Notre Dame and California.

Buncom took an official visit to Nashville on Nov. 29 and met with Mason on Monday night. He told 247Sports that he had “built a really good relationship with coach Mason for three years now. I really like him and their academics,” but it wasn’t to be.

Buncom was rated the nation’s 15th-best cornerback prospect in this year’s class. The Commodores currently have 15 commits including three four-stars.

Mason will likely put the full-court press on fellow California cornerback Quenton Meeks, a three-star, over the final days before signing day. Meeks is the son of San Diego Chargers secondary coach Ron Meeks.
