Alabama will be without one of its top playmakers in wide receiver John Metchie III in the College Football Playoff.

Metchie went down with a leg injury in the first half of the SEC Championship Game, and he didn’t return to the game in the second half.

ESPN’s Mark Schlabach is reporting that Alabama officials believe that Metchie tore his ACL against Georgia. The star wide receiver suffered the injury on a non-contact play, as he was planting his left leg in the turf.

Metchie ended up catching 8 passes for 97 yards and 1 touchdown against the Bulldogs.

Nick Saban said during his postgame press conference that Metchie will likely be out for the Playoff, but he gave no indication as to the severity of the injury.

That would obviously be brutal news for Alabama and Metchie. Not only is he a primary weapon in the passing game, but he’s a projected top 10 player at his position ahead of the 2022 NFL Draft. Now, he suffers a setback ahead of the Playoff run and spring NFL Draft.
