Alabama sports fans aren’t happy with the Tuscaloosa city council this week after the city announced a fee on large events that serve alcohol.

For ticketed events of at least 1,000 people where alcohol is sold, a percentage of the sales of each ticket will go to “public safety fees.”

That prompted the University of Alabama to announce it would no longer sell alcohol at sporting events while this fee was in place.

On Tuesday, university president Stuart R. Bell also issued a statement stating how much the school, and particularly the athletics department, does for the city as a whole:

We’ll see if this city council plan sticks, or if the city of Tuscaloosa reconsiders. It seems like a strange thing for the city council to do, hurting the school that draws so many people to the town.
