Alabama is seeing a 2024 blue-chip signee leave the program before playing a regular-season down for the Crimson Tide.

Peyton Woodyard signed with the Crimson Tide in December as part of the 2024 class. He enrolled at UA in January. While the coaching change provided a 30-day window for enrolled players to enter the transfer portal, Woodyard was among those who elected to stay and participate in spring practice.

After going through spring, Woodyard has decided to play elsewhere.

Woodyard as a recruit

A standout of the prominent California program St. John Bosco, Woodyard checked in at Alabama measuring 6-2, 188 pounds.

Woodyward was rated 4-stars, the No. 8 safety, No. 10 recruit in the state of California and No. 115 prospect overall nationally on the 247Sports Composite for the Class of 2024.

During his recruitment, Woodyard collected scholarship offers from 36 programs. He verbally committed to Georgia back on Jan. 7, 2023. While pledged to the Bulldogs, Woodyard took June 2023 visits to Alabama, Georgia, USC and Ohio State.

In August, Woodyard decided to flip his commitment from Georgia to Alabama.

What’s next for Woodyard?

SEC rules do not allow for spring transfer portal entrants to receive immediate eligibility within the conference.

Considering his California roots and previous USC interest, the Trojans could be a team to watch to land Woodyard, if he’s looking to go back home.

For Alabama, Woodyard is only the third player to enter the spring portal, which closes this week. Only three portal entrants after the first practices with a new coaching staff show that most of the roster is buying in for Kalen DeBoer.
