Alabama was led to a thrilling 88-84 road win over Mississippi State thanks to a standout performance from Chris Youngblood, who led the way from beyond the arc.

The No. 4 Crimson Tide and No. 14 Bulldogs met on Wednesday night in Starkville. They delivered a thriller in which neither team ever led by double digits. Alabama closed as a slight road underdog, but rallied late to secure the close victory, UA’s 4th straight SEC win.

Mississippi State posted slightly better shooting numbers on Thursday night. The Bulldogs made more field goals (33-31) for a higher shooting percentage (50-49). The Crimson Tide made the difference with the 3-ball.

Alabama was 15-of-31 from 3-point land on Wednesday night, 7 triples better than Mississippi State’s 8-of-25 mark beyond the arc. MSU’s Josh Hubbard did all he could, making 6 3-pointers as part of a 38-point night, but Chris Youngblood was the hero. UA’s high scorer on a night with 4 Alabama players in double figures, Youngblood drained 7 3-pointers and 2 key free throws for 23 points.

The Tide’s largest lead of the game was 9 points, 59-50 at the 14:17 mark of the 2nd half. MSU never led by more than 6 points, but the Bulldogs were up 76-75 with 5:49 before surrendering the lead.

It was an 85-84 game in the final minute. Youngblood, who had missed 2 free throws earlier, made 2 free throws with 10 seconds remaining to make it an 87-84. Grant Nelson added the final free throw with 5 seconds left to extend the lead to 88-84, the game’s final score.

Alabama improves to 18-3 overall and 7-1 in conference play. The Tide will look to make it 5 in a row against Georgia on Saturday.

Mississippi State falls to 16-5 overall with a 4-4 SEC record. The Bulldogs will try to bounce back against No. 20 Mizzou.
