Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Amari Cooper was the subject of a social media hoax on Wednesday.

According to multiple outlets, a now-deleted tweet from The Offseason stated that the former Alabama standout had been shot in a parking garage in the Dallas area. The tweet went viral, prompting the Dallas Police Department to speak out on its own verified Twitter account.

“There has been a tweet going viral that Amari Cooper has been shot in the Dallas area. We have NOT found any validity to that tweet occurring in the city of #Dallas,” the Dallas PD tweeted. “At this time, there has been NO shooting incident occurring in the city of Dallas.”

A spokesman for Frisco, Texas police also told reporter Michael Gehlken, “We’re seeing the same thing, but there’s nothing like that.”

Cooper used his Instagram story to assure fans that all is well and the story was “fake news”:

After beginning his NFL career with the Oakland Raiders, Cooper just completed his first full season with the Cowboys in 2019. He posted career highs of 79 receptions,1,189 receiving yards and 8 touchdown catches, earning a Pro Bowl invitation. He is set to become an unrestricted free agent if Dallas does not sign him to an extension before March 18.
