Former Alabama QB A.J. McCarron suffered a serious knee injury on Saturday against the Miami Dolphins, but on Sunday, the Atlanta Falcons confirmed the worst fears.

McCarron has a torn right ACL and the diagnosis was confirmed by an MRI on Sunday. He is out for the season, the Falcons announced.

While the Falcons look for another quarterback to backup Matt Ryan, something coach Arthur Smith noted is a possibility, the Falcons at the moment have undrafted rookie Feleipe Franks as the only other healthy passer on the roster.

McCarron, who has been in the NFL since 2014, signed with Atlanta this offseason after playing for the Houston Texans the previous two seasons.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s D. Orlando Ledbetter reported that the top free agent quarterbacks on the market are Alex Smith, Robert Griffin III, Blake Bortles, Josh McCown (42), Ryan Findley, Josh Rosen, Jake Rudock, Case Cookus, Jamie Newman and K.J. Costello.
