It’s not cheap to sign a starting quarterback these days.

The free agent quarterback market earned Kirk Cousins a record-setting $84 million deal (all guaranteed) while even journeyman signal-callers like Sam Bradford and Josh McCown netted annual deals that will pay them $20 million and $10 million, respectively.

That’s why A.J. McCarron might’ve been the biggest bargain of them all.

The newly-signed Buffalo Bills quarterback reportedly agreed to a deal that will pay him a base value $10 million over 2 years with a possible $6.5 million in playing incentives, according to Pro Football Talk.

According to Spotrac, McCarron gets $6.8 million guaranteed at signing and a total of $7.9 million guaranteed in the deal. His cap hit in 2018 will be $3 million, while his cap hit in 2019 will be $7 million. What that means is following Tyrod Taylor’s trade to Cleveland and McCarron’s acquisition, Buffalo saved $10.4 million in cap space.

Pro Football Talk reported that McCarron’s incentives will earn him $1 million if he takes 60 percent of the snaps in 2018, and another $1 million if he takes 75 percent of the snaps. If McCarron takes 75 percent of the snaps, his base will go up to $2.5 million in 2019.

All things considered, that move gave the Bills a lot of options. McCarron will likely be penciled in as the starter in 2018, and he’ll be among the cheapest starting quarterbacks in the league.

As for what happens after that, well, McCarron could just be playing for his next contract with a new team:
