The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are undefeated and sitting at No. 4 in the College Football Playoff rankings.

That means the Irish and coach Brian Kelly have a great chance to make it to the final four, where a rematch against Alabama (from the 2013 BCS National Championship Game) could await.

During a College GameDay segment with reporter Gene Wojciechowski, though, Kelly wouldn’t go as far as to say the Irish want a rematch with the Tide:

“If the Playoff stars worked out, would you love to have a rematch against them?” Wojciechowski asks.

“Be careful what you wish for,” Kelly says. “If they got upset in the first round, I would not be unhappy at all. I’d be OK with that. At the end of the day, we played Georgia last year to a tie and they beat us by one point, and they played Alabama pretty good. So if it got down to that, we’d sign up for that duty.”

Kelly has clearly seen what happens to teams that say “We want Bama” and he’s playing it cool. He added that he has a lot of respect for Nick Saban and the Tide when Wojciechowski asked him if the Tide’s dominance is bad for college football:

“I think you have to look at it from a perspective of, ‘Are they doing all the things everybody else is doing?'” he asks. “They are. They don’t cheat. Nick Saban is an honorable football coach. Their business plan is different than Notre Dame’s, but when it comes to football, they do it the right way.”

Notre Dame faces a tough test against Northwestern on Saturday, so they’ll need to take care of business there before looking ahead to the Playoff.
