Alabama signee Bryce Young rated as No. 1 overall prospect in the nation by 247Sports' recruiting evaluators
Alabama has officially signed the nation’s top prospect in the 2020 recruiting cycle according to 247Sports.
If you missed the news, 247Sports updated its individual prospect ratings for the final time on Tuesday and Alabama’s new signal-caller from California landed at the very top of the list.
The 5-foot-11, 183-pound native of Santa Ana, Ca., and Mater Dei High School product was already rated as a five-star prospect by 247Sports Composite Rankings but now Crimson Tide fans can boast that Nick Saban’s program landed the perfect high school recruit to potentially replace Tua Tagovailoa in the lineup next fall.
Young has already enrolled at Alabama and will be participating in spring football in Tuscaloosa after competing in the All-American Bowl High School Game.
After the California native signed with Alabama, Saban offered these comments on his latest QB signee.
“I just absolutely love the guy. I love his character. He’s got a great family. He’s got all the right stuff, and I think that’s really important in the quarterback position,” Saban said of Young. “You’ve heard me say this many times before – if you play quarterback, it’s hard to play the position if the people around you don’t play well, so having great leadership qualities can contribute to that. I think Bryce certainly possesses those qualities.”
Safe to say the recruiting evaluators at 247Sports agree with Coach Saban.
His rating puts him tied as the highest rated player recruited at Bama under Saban…
I’m trying to tell you he’s the real deal
I’m not saying he is not the real deal… I just don’t see him starting unless Mac gets hurt. Like I said, I would love to be wrong though if he is that good.
Mac Jones has earned his right to start in 2020. He proved it vs AU & Mich.
That’s the logic that sent Justin Fields to Ohio State
Mac Jones has earned the right to compete in camp.
I’m curious as to how a 5′ 11″ QB can be the best player in the country when he won’t be able to see over his giant linemen.
Probably same way Russell Wilson and Kyler Murray do it. Or Michael Vick, Joe Theismann, or Drew Bress, who are only one inch taller.
None of those were the #1 player coming out of high school though.
If your lineman is standing straight up then you have other problems.
TUA Turntheballova is 6 feet…. Not that big of a deal…
I like to call him Tua NeverlosttoUGA…
I like to call him Tua 2nd and 26!
Ah yes, the Simmons post-signing day Bama bump. All is normal, nothing to see here.
Did it bother you that bad?
Do you think he isn’t worthy of the rating?
Even a Bama hater like me been saying for some time this kid is some kinda scary good…dam mit man. Could be a long quiet ride back from Tuscaloosa in September
It really is too bad Bama has a track record of landing highly rated recruits and doing nothing to develop them into NFL prospects.
Wait, I’m sorry, that’s Gus & Co.
Yet with all those #1 classes and 5* players, Saban is only 4-3 against Gus. Pretty sad.
Well Saban does have 5 NCs and 6 Conference championships at Bama….
It’s al good though. Congratulations on your coach having a losing record against him. That’s definitely something to beat yourself chest about.
Pretty pathetic results with the talent advantage he has.
If 5 NC and 6 conference championships is pathetic then Auburn is straight garbage….
Definitely worthy of the ranking
Anyone else hearing rumors about a potential major NCAA violation coming down on Saban and Bama? I’ve only seen it mentioned on message boards and facebook currently but its starting to pop up more and more as the day goes on. The rumor is that there is a recording of Bama staffers (unsure if its Saban) talking to a recruit. Not sure what is on the recording and I’m not going to speculate. Just curious if anyone else heard this and if there’s any truth to it.
I’ve not seen anything like this mentioned anywhere… What message board was it?
SECRants, some supposed LSU insider posted about it first but several Bama fans commented on it saying that they heard the rumors as well. Was just curious if anyone on here knew anything else about it as info is pretty scarce now.
LOL, this would be front page news, even in the wake of Kobe’s death, if it were true.
Talking to them during the dead period or something? Or after signing their LOI? I doubt that would be anywhere near a level I violation, if even a level II.
Mac Jones has earned his right to start in 2020. He proved it vs AU & Mich.
And Mullen doesn’t talk to recruits? Please. Your comments are about as useless as a $3 bill. All you young people have nothing more to do then to spread a bunch of crap. Deal with it. Worry about beating GA!
Not trying to take a shot at Bama, just curious if anyone had more info as I’ve only seen rumors. The message board was SECRants and it was an LSU insider that posted it.
Also I don’t think the issue was that he talked to recruits, it seems something was said on the recording that would not be a good look for Bama, but like I said, this is all rumors and I was just trying to get more info on it. Thanks for showing your insecurities though, cmahan.
Well you have posted plenty of negative comments about Bama before so it wasn’t out of the realm of possibility that you did it just to try to get people on SDS talking about cheating Bama….
Like I said I haven’t seen anything and I would imagine this would be everywhere by now if true…
You’d be surprised what can be swept under the rug. I heard from a pretty reliable source that UGA paid for Deandre Swift’s dad’s new gym in Philly to get him to sign.
So now it’s being swept under the rug? Just stop…
Never said it was swept under the rug, did I? Just that things like this can be kept quiet so just because ESPN hasn’t reported on it doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. It also doesn’t mean it did happen. Which, if you remember, was the whole point of my original post; to gather more information on a rumor that I came across to determine if it was true or false. Also most of my negative posts towards Bama is actually towards idiot fan comments (like yours usually are) or toward that super creep, David Wasson, and his disturbing articles.
So you ask a question, receive answers and then follow up with stuff can be swept under the rug…. Your intent is pretty clear at this point.
You wanted to post some garbage hoping someone would jump on it with, those cheating Bammers.. You didn’t get that. You got the opposite so you come back with things can be covered up because of a reliable source for something at UGA…
You already has your mind made up and intentions before your posted… There is an idiot fan comment here… It’s yours.. Go waste someone else’s time.
Wrong again, BamaTime. No one gave a legit answer to my question. Other than “Never heard it so its fake!” Not the response I was looking for but I guess I should’ve know some overly sensitive Bama fans would get their panties all in a wad for even mentioning anything negative about their lover, Nicky Saban.
How in God’s name do you think a college can pay for an entire gym and get away with it, especially when the said recruit has attained such a high profile status like Swift?
UGA had actively been pursuing Swift since before his junior year of high school, and had no serious competition other than from Penn State and Clemson. The idea that a running back would have to take bribery to choose UGA as his school over those two is laughable.
I don’t think anyone would be surprised at what can be swept under the rug after Urban Meyer managed to sweep the fact his tight end shot a dude in the face under that rug.
“Anyone else hearing rumors about a potential major NCAA violation coming down on Saban and Bama? “
That was your question so people saying they haven’t heard of it would be a legit answer to your question. Like I said you wanted someone to follow up with Bama is cheating but it didn’t happen… Nice try but nobody is buying your garbage..
BamaTime, I saw the post that Gator is referring to. The OP of it is typically pretty accurate and several Bama commenters confirmed that they heard the rumors too. Not saying its true as I have no direct knowledge myself but Gator isn’t making this up. Also I didn’t think his original post was taking a shot at Bama or trying to rile up fans. To me it seemed like he was legitimately curious if anyone else heard about it or knew more about it and while you said you never heard about it (before taking a few cheap shots I might add), several other Gumps came on to bash Florida and Mullen or say that it can’t be true because its not on major tv stations yet. I could be completely wrong and Gator may have been trying to rile you guys up (which worked), but I didn’t read it that way.
I went to SEC rants and looked at it. It didn’t seem to have any merit and was being spread by a guy banned from the Bama site…
That being said, people told him they haven’t heard the rumor which is what he asked but that wasn’t good enough. He asked a question, got an answer but then wanted to kick the cab down the road to stuff being swept under the Rug and bringing UGA into the conversation. You say I took cheap shot but when he wants to talk “idiot fan comments” and then list me
I’m going to throw it back at him…
If his intent was to only see if people heard about it then it would have ended when people said no. His post history on Bama topics doesn’t support him just being curious..
Yea I mean both of you are pretty big trolls on this site so not trying to get in the middle of you two. Just pointing out that I saw it as well and I didn’t take his comment as a shot at Bama, though I could be wrong as I don’t know his intent.
The “you’re a troll” gets thrown at everyone when they post on another teams article…
I’ve seen you called a troll. I find it funny you throw out troll and it’s a Bama article…
Below was a reply to you in a Florida article. Guess you’re a troll too…
“Trashcan the only ones disrespecting others here are the legion of Georgia trolls and you, so go fly a kite in traffic“
I saw the rumor as well. The original poster is some LSU insider who is supposedly pretty accurate with his reports so take that as you will…
What is Simmons post signing day Bama bump?
Think he’s referring to Barton Simmons. Director of scouting for 247 and also, to some, known as a bammer.
After signing day, Barton Simmons rearranges his rankings on 247 based on where a kid signs. It’s not a conspiracy, he’s admitted as much. His logic is that some kids will be better NFL prospects by playing at certain teams. It always results in a Bama bump in rankings. Auburn commits/signees always drop for no reason (22 of 24 did yesterday, some by as many as 50 spots).
All the ranking services changes player ranking numerous times…
You’re missing the part where all of life is a conspiracy against auburn.
:(
The only problems I have with recruiting rankings are they are subscription based, meaning more people who pay into a subscription for a certain team, will get a bump. The other problem is what has changed since the last recruiting update. There hasn’t been any real games or combines or anything like that.. so how do they justify kids moving up hundreds of spots up?
Did they update them after the All-American games or is this the second update? If it’s the 2nd update then yes, it’s a little perplexing.
Not sure on that but to drop and bump players hundreds of spots on an all star game is weird to me. Not a great sample size to justify that type of movement IMO.
Maybe not but it’s something they always do. They didn’t change their evaluation/rating process because of the early signing period… This used to always take place prior to players signing…
That’s kinda my point. They make all these changes around this time and happens to be around signing day, which is typically the time with the most clicks on these sites. Clicks = money.
Amazing how all of these Bama classes full of overrated players given fake rankings bumps to sell website subscriptions have ended up playing so well.
Recruiting is a projection. There’s no exact science to it. There’s countless players rated high that bust and lower ranked players that flourish. I would say most are worthy of their ranking but to have so much movement in a short period time is baffling. They are not fake rankings because that’s how it’s done. It’s a business. A money driven business. More clicks/subscriptions means more money and favorable rankings.
You’re missing the part about Simmon’s logic. He acknowledges bumping players for certain schools based on fit. It’s not a conspiracy if it’s an admitted fact. Right or wrong, that’s his prerogative as a Bammer. The composite at least paints a more logical view.
He was number 2 in the composite before the bump and is still number 2….
You never did answer my question. Is he not worthy of the top spot?
They signed the overall prospect according to 247 last year too. He transferred to Colorado though.
We won’t be so lucky this time around…Tau n Tyson in the portal by june
Taulia, yes, but Tyson is apparently content to be part of the program, with eyes on coaching down the line.
Can’t imagine Tyson would simply give up on being a college QB, dude’s got some serious skills from the tape I’ve seen of him…
He does and he may end up transferring but he and his family has a lot of ties to the University so you never know.
It’s a shame we didnt get his reciever too, no. 5. Kid can ball
I haven’t watched him play but from what I’ve read he’s got otherworldly pocket presence and such. The Clemson commit is a goddang tight end playing QB.
The Clemson commit is basically JaMarcus Russel 2.0. Which was a good thing in college.
The last time I claimed a rival’s QB was a Tight End playing out of position didn’t end well for me at all.
Looks like BAMA’s 1st ever QB Heisman winner is about to take the field…in 2021. At least Tua’s school passing records will be safe for 1 season. Mac Jones calls the shots in 2020.
So Mac Jones gets to start his junior year but is benched as a senior? Not that there’s no precedent but it probably doesn’t turn out that way.
If this Bryce kid is as good as advertised (and frankly I haven’t really read up or looked at his stats), then I could easily see him taking over midseason next year ala Jalen Hurts his freshman year. The hype attached to Bryce is unlike any other qb I can recall.
This final 247 Sports re-ranking also pushed Bama’s class to no. 1 overall, with UGA right behind. It’s still a virtual three-way dead heat with Clemson. LSU, A&M, Auburn and Florida are currently in the top eight, giving the SEC 6 of those 8 positions. Wednesday should clarify things for us.
These classes or so close this year that the top 3 should all really be tied for first…
Also, it’s all made up and recruiting isn’t actually a sport etc etc.
Very true..
Am I the only one who’s doubting that a 5-foot-11, 183-pound QB is really the best High school prospect in America?
I’m sure he’s a great player, but I just don’t see it…
I understand your point but the game has evolved to where its not a big deal at all that he is only 5’11 183. Plenty of Qb’s have flourished who are his size. Kyler Murray was a 5 star I believe and ended up being the number 1 pick. He is a inch or two below Bryce and had a nice rookie year for the Cardinals especially towards the end of the year. 247’s ranking system is based off the NFL draft and the rankings council mentioned that Bryce DJ and Brian are all tied for number 1, but Bryce got the top ranking because of the lack of stigma around a smaller qb anymore in the NFL. So they think he is most likely out of the 3 to go number 1 in the draft. I don’t have a problem with him at 2 or 3 but of course being a Bama fan I enjoy him being number 1.
I agree, the offenses have evolved to a point where a smaller mobile QB can absolutely flourish, etc.
I’m just looking at it from a how would you build the perfect QB, DB, DE, etc prospect. Look at the other players in the composite top 5. Bresee, Fleming, Gilbert and Ringo are prototypical size for their positions.
What measurement could you possibly change to make an improvement? It just seems that 5’11 183 must come with some limitations…
TT is 6 feet not that big of a deal… every qb aint gotta be 6’2 or 6’4 to be good…
Yo yTho, ain’t gonna start no racist crap is yo 6 nemgrave bro…how’s it shakin?
Am I the only one wondering where #5 is going after watching this? He was on the end if 90% of those passes…Had hands, speed, strength and Is just good.
