While ranking Georgia as No. 1 in Tuesday’s College Football Playoff rankings was an easy call for the selection committee, it apparently faced a little tougher discussion when it came to ranking the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th teams.

Ultimately, it remained the same as it was last week: Alabama was slotted at No. 2, while Oregon and Ohio State were put at Nos. 3 and 4, respectively. The Crimson Tide romped past New Mexico State 59-3, with the Ducks topping Washington State 38-24 and the Buckeyes topping Purdue 59-31 at the Horseshoe.

In fact, the top 7 remained unchanged from the previous rankings. But that didn’t mean that teams 2 through 4 saw a possibility of being readjusted at the end of the day.

“I can tell you that 2, 3 and 4 was an area where the conversation was a little bit longer,” CFP chairman Gary Barta said on Tuesday night. “[W]e didn’t learn a lot about Alabama this week but continue to be impressed with the way they play on both sides of the ball, but there was good conversation about where Alabama, Oregon and Ohio State should be placed. Ultimately when the vote occurred, it ended up the way it is, 2, 3, 4, Alabama, Oregon and Ohio State. But there was a lot of conversation with those three teams.”

All 3 teams on Saturday square off against opponents ranked in the CFP top 25. Alabama hosts No. 21 Arkansas while Oregon travels to Salt Lake City to face No. 23 Utah. Ohio State has the biggest game of all, hosting No. 7 Michigan State at Ohio Stadium as they look to clinch the Big Ten East.
