Channing Crowder had to bring it up.

During Nick Saban’s appearance on “The Pivot” podcast with Crowder, Ryan Clark and Fred Taylor on Tuesday, Crowder asked Saban about a moment that at the time was serious but a few decades later is hilarious. It happened during Saban’s pit stop in the NFL when he was the head coach of the Miami Dolphins in 2005 and 2006.

Saban, who was in between his coaching tenures with LSU and Alabama, took his first and only head coaching job in the NFL with the Dolphins. And Crowder, the former star linebacker at Florida, was in his first 2 seasons in the NFL while playing for Saban with the Dolphins.

So, Crowder remembered an encounter between he and Saban in the bathroom at the team’s training facility. Crowder was playing on his phone in the stall when Saban walked in. Crowder said he had to walk out and talk to his head coach, so he emerged from the stall, washed his hands, looked over and asked Saban about his wife, Miss Terry, who used to bring cookies to the team.

Crowder said it was a Wednesday at practice, and he had just given up a 3rd-down catch to a Buffalo Bills running back that apparently was very fresh in Saban’s mind.

“She’ll be a lot better if you could cover a f—–g back on 3rd down,” answered Saban.

Crowder marveled that Saban was so quick to answer back with that comment 3 days after Crowder allowed that 3rd-down catch.

They could laugh hard about it now, but nobody was laughing in the bathroom that day in South Florida some 2 decades ago.
