Mike Pitts, a member of the Philadelphia Eagles’ “Gang Green” defense in 1991, has passed away at the age of 61, the team announced Monday.

Pitts, a defensive tackle, was a key member of an Eagles team that ranked as the top defensive unit in the NFL in the 1991 season. Philadelphia finished that year 10-6 as Pitts registered 100 tackles and 2.0 sacks.

Before his NFL tenure, Pitts was a star at Alabama, gaining All-American honors following the 1982 season. He was a 1st-round pick by the Atlanta Falcons and spent 4 seasons with them before he was traded the the Eagles prior to the 1987 season, remaining there until 1992. Pitts then played 2 seasons with the New England Patriots before his retirement, totaling 814 tackles and 48.5 sacks during his career.

He also coached in the NFL, spending the 2000 season with the Cleveland Browns as a defensive assistant.
