Former Alabama All-American Rashaan Evans’ time in Dallas has come to an end.

Evans’ Wednesday release follows a Tuesday arrest in Frisco for possession of marijuana, 2-4 ounces, according to reports. Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy focused on roster management when asked about parting with Evans.

“We’ll answer that at the end of the week. I think that’s important to be answered then. These are roster moves, and they’re tough moves,” McCarthy said, per The Athletic. “It’s a bit of a catch-22. We’re a healthy football team, and we hope that it stays that way.

“But when you get down to this time of year, you start to project, particularly with young players, this is why you have to make tough decisions like this. So, this really stems from being healthy. Also the tackle position and we felt the depth with Wally (Matt Waletzko) would be beneficial.”

Evans played in 9 games for Dallas during the 2023 season, making 1 start. He had 9 tackles on the season. Per The Dallas Morning News, Evans played only 7 snaps, all on special teams, in the Cowboys’ Week 16 game against the Miami Dolphins.

Evans has played professionally since 2018. He was an Alabama student-athlete from 2014-to-2017, helping the Crimson Tide win national championships in 2015 and ’17. Evans was named All-SEC and a first-team All-American in his final season.

The Tennessee Titans selected Evans with the No. 22 overall pick in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Evans remained with the Titans through the 2021 season.

Evans signed a 1-year contract with the Atlanta Falcons ahead of the 2022 season. A 17-game starter for the Falcons, Evans posted a career-high 159 combined tackles. Evans had 2 sacks, 4 passes defended, 1 forced fumble and 1 fumble recovery last season.
