After the San Francisco 49ers’ stunning victory over the Los Angeles Rams on Monday Night Football, the team had another stunner by releasing former Alabama CB Dre Kirkpatrick.
The 49ers announced their decision via Twitter on Tuesday afternoon:
The #49ers have waived CB Dre Kirkpatrick.

Kirkpatrick was the first-round draft choice of the Cincinnati Bengals back in 2012 and played with the club for 7 seasons before moving onto the Arizona Cardinals in 2020 and then the 49ers in 2021.
According to Chris Biderman, who covers the 49ers for the Sacramento Bee, the move wasn’t that unexpected.
Biderman tweeted this about the situation:
Releasing Dre Kirkpatrick isn’t a huge move on its face. But it’s notable given the way the first half of the season went. It signals the 49ers might actually be willing to play Ambry Thomas and Deommodore Lenoir over a street free agent responsible for some really dismal plays.
