The Washington Redskins selected Alabama DL Jonathan Allen in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft, but after a promising start, he injured his foot and had to miss the final 11 games of the season.

As the Redskins’ offseason workouts approach, Allen is eager to get back on the field, but after a Lisfranc injury, he knows he has to be smart about his return.

This week, he told Redskins.com that he’s feeling good and is ready to get started on his second NFL season:

“I’m out there running, getting off the ball, cutting back,” Allen told Redskins.com. “And there’s definitely a balance because you don’t want to rush back so early, but I feel really good right now. I’m excited about how much progress I made, and I’m looking forward to getting started.”

OTAs start this month, but Allen admitted he’s not sure exactly how much action he’ll see during the early stages of team activities:

“I’m going to be honest, the OTAs they start like end of April, and this will be my first time, so I would like to think so, but I mean, honestly, there’s no way of telling at this point,” Allen said. “I feel like I’m going to be in a good spot come OTAs, so I’m excited for that, and right now, I’m just taking it day by day just trying to grind.”

The Redskins are counting on Allen to be a big part of their defense this coming season, so making sure he works his way back into game shape is going to be something they keep their eyes on this spring and summer.
