Though former Alabama LBs DeMeco Ryans and Reuben Foster missed each other in Tuscaloosa by about 10 years, they have ended up in the same place — San Francisco.

Foster was a first-round pick by the 49ers in this year’s NFL Draft and Ryans, only one year removed from his playing career and serving as the 49ers’ defensive quality control coach, have been spending a lot of time together as Foster picks Ryans’ brain about all things football.

According to linebackers coach Johnny Holland (via 49ers.com), Foster has already learned a lot from Ryans, who spent his 10-year NFL career with the Houston Texans and Philadelphia Eagles:

“He’s a guy that has great character. Great football player,” Holland said. “(He’s) a guy Reuben is going to have his ears wide open listening to. DeMeco just recently left the game, and this is not new to him. So, Reuben sits by him every day and asks him questions.”

Foster is currently rehabbing after shoulder surgery, but Holland said he’s still on the sidelines during practices soaking everything in:

“He’s on the field doing whatever he can,” Holland said. “This probably one of the hardest things he’s been through as far as being in the meeting rooms but not being able to apply it in practice every day. But he’s beside me almost every day in practice and getting the calls and putting himself in those situations.”

Foster recorded 115 tackles and five sacks for the Crimson Tide in 2016. He was the No. 31 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.
