Former Alabama linebacker Shawn Murphy has committed to transfer to Florida State, according to multiple reports. 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz had the news first.

Murphy becomes the fifth former Alabama player to commit to transfer to Florida State so far this offseason. He’s a former 4-star recruit who signed with the Tide in the 2022 class and comes to Tallahassee with three years of eligibility remaining.

The 6-foot-2, 225-pound Virginia product was the sixth-ranked linebacker in the 2022 class, per the industry-generated 247 Composite. He was a top-100 overall prospect in the class.

At Alabama, he appeared in five games (one of them the bowl game) during his true freshman season in 2022 and collected two tackles and a pass breakup. He saw action in 13 games during the 2023 season — mostly on special teams — and recorded three tackles.

He saw only a handful of defensive snaps across his two seasons in Tuscaloosa, most of them as a middle ‘backer in run support.

Florida State now holds 14 known transfer commitments during the winter cycle. Murphy joins running back Roydell Williams, wide receiver Malik Benson, offensive guard Terrence Ferguson, and cornerback Earl Little II as former Alabama players to commit to Mike Norvell and the Seminoles.

The transfer class ranks third in the country.

As for Alabama, the Tide have three known transfer pledges, but with new coach Kalen DeBoer now in place, it’ll be interesting to watch how the portal is utilized.

Five players have entered the portal since Nick Saban announced his retirement — Murphy one of them. With DeBoer leaving Washington and Washington subsequently poaching Jedd Fisch from Arizona, those two programs have seen 30-day transfer windows open up. Does anyone follow DeBoer from Seattle? Does an elite talent like Tetairoa McMillan — Arizona’s leading receiver — take his services to the open market? And depending on who takes the Arizona job, more players could be looking at the portal soon.
