5-star Ga'Quincy 'Koolaid' McKinstry, nation's No. 1 cornerback prospect, announces college commitment
The nation’s No. 1 cornerback just announced his college commitment.
Five-star prospect Ga’Quincy McKinstry of Pinson, Ala., just announced his pledge to Nick Saban’s Alabama program over Auburn and LSU during a live commitment ceremony from his Pinson Valley High School.
McKinstry says he plans to play both football and basketball for the Crimson Tide.
Why Alabama over Auburn and LSU?
“I just feel this is where I can be myself at, I’m not far away from my family,” McKinstry said after committing to the Tide. “And now I can finally say it, I’ve been recruited since I was a freshman, I can finally say I’ve been an Alabama fan all my life. My dream school.”
The 5-foot-11, 175-pound Pinson, Ala., native is rated as the No. 1 cornerback prospect in the nation in the 2021 recruiting cycle and the No. 24 overall prospect in the class according to 247Sports Composite Rankings.
Prior to this commitment, Alabama already had the No. 1 recruiting ranking in the nation for the 2021 recruiting cycle. The Crimson Tide now hold commitments from 22 overall prospects and five pledges from five-star prospects.
To get an idea of what Alabama is getting in McKinstry, take a look at his sophomore season highlight reel:
Great pickup in 5* G. McKinstry. Hopefully we can get a couple more to fill this class.
Yeah, cuz bama really needs a couple more or things could get ugly!
Give me a f#ckin break…
Did he say things would get ugly? All teams want to recruit the best players….
Cry about it somewhere else..
His coach is Bo’s dad?
Yes. He and Bo were teammates.
Was his coach. Nix is now at Central Phoenix I think. His coach this year is Sam Shade. Shade is the ex Bama DB.
Could’ve been the x-factor in his decision.
He lives right outside of Birmingham. No surprise here.
According to 24/7 Recruiting, Auburn had a 67% chance to get him 2 months ago. Just last month he swung in Bama’s favor.
The bigger check cleared?
Really? We all know that they use cash. Checks leave a paper trail. Just ask LSU.
Bama uses chargers.
I think he probably thought the GusBus is having mechanical issues and he wants to continue the tradition of beating the dawgs.
Uga your biggest rival now?
Lol humper. Been exiled to Sakerlina for 25 years and have often simply stated, “let you Climpson and Cock fans in on a secret. We have a special fund, as supporters, that we contribute to as we can, just for mom and dad”. Hilarious how many folks believed it. Enjoy all Y’all giving me my daily chuckle. RTR and fAU.
That’s how recruiting can change so quickly during a season. AU hasn’t looked good and Bama is still bama. Same with Lassiter that picked uga last week and Jeremiah Williams who was 100% to AU all recruitment and will likely pick UF now.
He probably was going to Bama all along. These guys enjoy the attention the build-up to the commitment gives them. Let them enjoy it. He said he grew up a Bama fan, so there you go. There wasn’t much chance Bo Nix was going to play anywhere but Auburn, and rightly so.
Maybe, maybe not but Auburn’s struggles this year didn’t help with his recruitment and most pegged him to go to auburn heading into the year.
That loss to USC cost Auburn huge in recruiting. Mckinstry really was 50/50 between Auburn and Bama. Lassiter and Jerrimiah Williams were almost certain things. Mondon was a huge lean for Auburn. Now Auburn is missing on all of their biggest targets and will be lucky to hold on to Hunter and Goodwin. Impossible to recruit with a lame duck head coach.
Wow…..UGA and LSPaycheckU talking about paying players….geesh. With the officiating Auburn has gotten so far this season I think if I was an Auburn fan id keep my mouth shut.
I’m surprised as a 5 star player he would even consider auburn over Bama. Auburn is a very mediocre program that goes 8-4 or if they are lucky 9-3 pretty much every season along with some average bowl game. Auburn’s national championship game is the IB which is only another SEC game to Bama. Glad to see he made the best choice.
Nice get.. Now to get his signature come signing day…
Don’t think that will be an issue. Good get for Bama
McKinstry will stay Bama. No contest anymore.
Probably got a lock now on the #1 class.
He’ll put about 10 pounds on that frame in year one so I’m not to worry about size especially if he’s fast. I assume he’ll play corner I don’t know. A lil undersized for Saban’s liking but he’s a ATH so they usually find a spot somewhere. Punt returner, maybe WR slot.
He’s a CB. Also will play basketball.
He is a CB but I could see him at Safety…
He’d probably fit better at safety. If Alabama gets desperate at receiver, which they won’t, he can play there to. And now you have a reserve point guard in basketball too.
We lost Lassiter to Georgia, McKinstry to Bama, and Jeremiah Williams to Florida. This recruiting cycle is atrocious for us. Get Gus outta here please.
McKinstry is going to have to sit about a year until he’ll start. At Auburn, an immediate start was going to happen. He’d also have been coached better in basketball, but I understand that wasn’t a big priority. We wanted him to play receiver too, so he’d have played both sides of the ball. He definitely is playing to go pro. Not to be utilized in college.
What doesn’t make sense to me is that Auburn has put some future pro bowl corners in the NFL recently. McKinstry could’ve been the next.
Very frustrating but maybe he’ll be one of the five stars that never blossoms at Alabama, but that’s unlikely with his skill set.
By the way, McKinstry gave away the decision with the crimson tie he was wearing. Way to spoil it.
Bama is losing some depth on the backend this year.. He could start next year or at least get significant playing time in the rotation..
I think Surtain might be the only one leaving plus this year doesn’t count toward eligibility. McKinstry will see the field no question though.
