Greg McElroy has spent a lot of time analyzing the ongoing quarterback competition at Alabama this offseason. During Wednesday’s episode of Always College Football, he tackled a question about the Crimson Tide adding to that room during the spring transfer window.

McElroy admitted there is legitimate chatter around the idea of Alabama looking for a QB in the portal this spring. If the right player becomes available, McElroy believes Nick Saban would certainly consider an addition before the 2023 season.

“Let’s start with Alabama for a moment, of course, they’re going to be in the national title picture,” said McElroy. “If you listen to Nick Saban, you listen to people around the program there is a growing sentiment that if a guy hops in the portal at quarterback, they would strongly consider maybe adding somebody to that QB competition.”

In the end, McElroy believes that chatter could quiet down if someone in the QB competition has a fantastic showing in the spring game. For now, it’s certainly a topic to monitor with the portal window opening recently.

“Right now it’s Jalen Milroe, it’s Ty Simpson. It’s anybody’s guess whether or not the freshman Eli Holstein or others are really involved in the competition,” McElroy said. “And granted, all of that can go away with a terrific A-Day Game performance that comes up in a few days.”
