Since the Associated Press began naming its Player of the Year in 1998, the organization’s selection has been different from the Heisman Trophy winner only five times.

That’s bad news for Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa.

The AP on Thursday revealed Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray has been named its Player of the Year after claiming 39 of the 56 first-place votes. Tagovailoa, the Crimson Tide’s sensational sophomore signal-caller, earned just 13 first-place nods despite being considered the best player in the nation for most of the year.

In terms of points, Murray edged Tagovailoa 145-117. Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins pulled in four first-place votes and 55 points.

Those three players are the finalists for the Heisman Trophy, which will be presented Saturday night. It’s widely considered a two-horse race between Murray and Tagovailoa after the former put on a show in the Big 12 title game and the latter struggled mightily — albeit through apparent injury — during the SEC Championship Game.

The last two AP Players of the Year also went on to win the Heisman. The only seasons the two awards didn’t recognize the same player were 2000, 2001, 2002, 2009 and 2015.
