The way Clemson is playing so far this season, it may be difficult to imagine anyone other than Trevor Lawrence winning the Heisman Trophy.

However, if the Tigers stumble as the ACC season continues, which player is poised to step up and challenge the presumed No. 1 overall selection in the 2021 NFL Draft?

Tim Tebow was asked that question during his most recent appearance on ESPN show “First Take,” and the former Florida quarterback offered up a name few would have guessed leading up to the start of the 2020 season.

“I think Mac Jones has a real shot,” Tebow said on the show. “No one wanted to talk about him, they also talk ‘You’re losing Tua, one of the most accurate quarterbacks in college football history.’ But Mac Jones has come in and he’s fantastic and I love him because he has ice water in his veins and the moments not too big for him.

“Down at halftime against Georgia, it’s okay, guess what? I’m going to throw for a 90-yard (touchdown) right off the bat. This kid, I think he throws the best deep ball in college football and one of the best deep balls in the last 10 years. He isn’t a great athlete but he’s a great competitor that is extremely accurate and has freaks outside. If they are able to run the table and win the SEC Championship, I think he’ll have a legit chance at competing with Trevor in this Heisman race.”

So far this season, Jones has completed 90 of his 115 passes (78.3 percent) for 1,518 yards with 12 touchdowns and only two interceptions. If he keeps that up, there’s an excellent chance he’ll land an invitation to New York as a 2021 Heisman Trophy finalists.
