Ahead of Lane Kiffin’s return to Alabama as an opposing head coach, ESPN’s Chris Low and Alex Scarborough have published an entertaining feature titled ‘Nick Saban, Lane Kiffin and the year that changed Alabama football forever.’

From the get-go, college football fans were fascinated by the “odd couple” relationship of Saban as head coach and Kiffin as offensive coordinator. The highs of the relationship were on the field as Alabama’s offense frequently lit up the scoreboard with Kiffin calling the plays. The infamous sideline “ass-chewings” and Kiffin’s earlier-than-planned exit during the 2016 postseason were widely seen as the “lows” of the 3 seasons together.

The ESPN feature looks into how Kiffin’s “lack of organization” frustrated Saban during those 3 seasons:

“I wanted things done a certain way,” Saban said. “I wanted the coaches to meet. I wanted everybody to have input, and that was not his style. Some of the other coaches complained to me about it, and I always said that Lane would be a much better head coach than an assistant because when you’re a head coach and you know what you want to do and you’ve got organized people around you, you really don’t need to be that organized.”

The feature also humorously details Saban’s reaction to Kiffin using a “notepad of s—“ from their time working together in last year’s Alabama-Ole Miss game.
