Alabama quarterbacks hadn’t been heard of much in the NFL lately until Sunday when A.J. McCarron was thrust into action following an injury to Andy Dalton.

Before Sunday, McCarron had thrown four career passes in NFL games. But Cincinnati’s loss to Pittsburgh continued a winless streak of Alabama quarterbacks that dates to 1988. With Dalton’s return date unknown, McCarron will have a chance to end that streak soon.

John Parker Wilson played for the Atlanta Falcons and Jacksonville Jaguars, but was last on a roster in 2012. Brodie Croyle was a backup with the Kansas City Chiefs for five seasons before he retired after the 2011 season. Croyle was 0-for-10 in NFL starts.

Greg McElroy made one start in 2012, but retired after the 2013 season.

Jay Barker played for the Carolina Panthers and New England Patriots, but his career ended in 1996.

Different seasons, different teams, but a much different result than they saw in college where they led the Crimson Tide to national championships in 1992, 2009, 2011 and 2012.

Not since Jeff Rutledge, an NFL journeyman, in 1988 has a former Alabama quarterback won an NFL game. Rutledge was 11-for-17 for 113 yards and one touchdown in the only game he played for the Giants that season.

Rutledge started for Alabama’s 1978 national championship team and played 14 seasons in the NFL for the Rams, Giants and Redskins. Nicknamed the “wishbone warrior,” Rutledge was a backup on three Super Bowl teams.
