Joel Klatt has seen and heard both reactions to Alabama’s recent exodus of players from last season’s roster. It’s always more than nothing, and less than everything, the FOX Sports analyst said.

Klatt noted that there’s some sentiment within the fan base that the sky is falling. And it’s fair to ask for updated assessment of the Alabama program and the new roster.

“The problem is that I don’t know if you Tide fans have really gravitated toward this and actually grasped what that means,” Klatt said. “What does it actually mean what you’re dealing with right now? Because it’s not going to be as dominant as it was under Nick Saban. It’s not going to be as easy as it was under Nick Saban. This man was the great college coach in history.”

While the sky is not falling, and Alabama lost more talent than any other program, Klatt said, “In some ways, Alabama was built for this.”

Transitions are always messy, and it’s more complicated when there isn’t a succession model, such as Oklahoma or Ohio State, he said.

What Kalen DeBoer needs to do is circle the wagons and stabilize the roster, Klatt said, and the analyst pointed out that plenty of players are staying, including starting QB Jalen Milroe. After the dust settles, Klatt said Alabama will still have a top-5 roster, but he has questions about DeBoer’s recruiting efforts, and how those match up with Alabama’s expectations.
