Avery Johnson believes a significant change might not be a bad thing for basketball.

The Alabama hoops coach, who also spent 7 years as an NBA head coach, shared some thoughts about the one-and-done rule in college basketball.

If Johnson had it his way, basketball would copy another sport’s model.

“There’s no perfect way to do it,” Johnson said on ESPNU Radio. “We should have a system similar to what baseball does. If you’re good enough to go out of high school, which is a few guys at the top of the triangle that’s good enough to go straight from high school to the NBA, you don’t want to hold those kids back.

“Or if you go to college, spend a couple years in college. Whether that’s 2 years or 3 years, and I think that’d be even better for college basketball and for all of the coaches to help train and develop the kids so that those kids who do go to college, the NBA will get a little bit more of a mature kid, rather than kids that’s one-and-done.”

Johnson certainly isn’t the only one who believes a shift to the baseball model could benefit both the college and pro game. There’s talk that the current one-and-done rule could change in the coming years.

For now, though, Johnson will focus on beating Kentucky’s freshman-dominated squad when the two teams battle on Saturday.
