Kalen DeBoer has made a second staff change. After the reported firing of co-defensive coordinator Colin Hitschler, another move was made in which an Alabama staffer received a promotion.
Chuck Morrell is now listed as Alabama’s linebackers coach.

Promoting Morrell fills the on-field defensive staff opening created by Hitschler’s reported firing. At time of publishing, Hitschler is still listed on the coaching staff page as co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach.
Morrell has coached alongside DeBoer since 2020. He was the safeties coach at Fresno State in 2020 and ’21 before joining the Washington staff as co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach.
Under the new NCAA rules, Morrell has been allowed to coach players during practice and games as an analyst. Off-campus recruiting, however, is limited to 10 assistants, the same number of on-field coaching positions. As linebackers coach, he’s in a position to be more involved in recruiting the players he’ll be coaching.
Alabama’s defensive staff includes Kane Wommack (defensive coordinator), Freddie Roach (associate head coach/defensive line), Maurice Linguist (co-defensive coordinator, defensive backs) and Christian Robinson (outside linebackers).
