There can be many voices coming over the headsets of college football coaches on a Saturday during a game. Each team has 20 headsets that can be used, 15 of which are assigned to coaches.

It can surely be chaotic, and voices may be raised. Which leads to an important lesson that Lane Kiffin learned while he was serving as the offensive coordinator at Alabama under coach Nick Saban.

Don’t get your feelings hurt.

“I learned from my last boss [Saban] to tell my staff prior to games, ‘Hey, don’t take anything personal or be too sensitive because things are going to get said really fast.'” Kiffin said in a story by ESPN.com telling tales about headset communication. “I had plenty of experience with that in my three years at Alabama — taking all those ass-chewings reminded me to warn my coaches in advance.”

Saban can get heated about his team’s performance during games, so it’s no surprise that some rough things are probably said over the headsets at his assistants. But that tough love has certainly led to success over the years for the Crimson Tide.

Since leaving Alabama, Kiffin has had success of his own. Last year, he led Florida Atlantic to an 11-3 season. This year, the Owls are 2-2, but their losses have come against ranked opponents — No. 6 Oklahoma and No. 13 UCF.
