Nick Saban gave his thoughts after Dabo Swinney’s viral rant responding to a fan calling in on a radio show.

The Clemson head coach didn’t hold back responding to Tyler from Spartanburg, reminding the fan of what he’s accomplished during his time at Clemson.

While Saban didn’t hear what all Swinney said during the rant, the Alabama head coach knows a thing or 2 about having expectations and having a national spotlight on his team. Saban said he tries to just block out the outside noise and instead focus on the task at hand, which is winning games.

“I didn’t really hear what he had to say, so I can’t really comment on it,” Saban said during the SEC coaches teleconference Wednesday. “But the way I try to manage it is focus on the game that we’re playing, trying to get our team prepared to play the best they can play. Don’t listen to the noise outside, whether it’s good noise, bad noise, rat poison, whatever. And try to keep our team focused on the task at hand as well as you can have this go both ways.”

Saban empathized with Swinney, though. He knows that when you have a successful team, its sometimes easy to get complacent, which leads to criticism like Swinney has faced.

“When you have success sometimes you get complacent, when you get criticized, it’s frustrating,” Saban said. “But best thing I’ve found to do is not listen to it either way, stay focused on what’s in front of you. … I think that’s what you count on for your staff and other people in the organization, whether it’s how you try to psychologically prepare your guys to play to the standard they need to play to, to create value for themselves as well as value for our team.”

Clemson has had an off year relative to recent success, going 5-4 up to this point. The Tigers were able to get a big win over Notre Dame on Saturday, and they’re looking to use that win as momentum heading into the final stretch of the season.
